Bob Masters

Another DJ with amazing form. Next up on our DJ biogs is Bob Masters – you know he’s got soul!

Bob started DJ’ing at his mum’s youth club in Ilford at the age of 14. Spending all his hard earned pocket money at Moon Dog Records in East Ham and going to see Froggy at Ilford Town Halls under 18’s gig every Monday Nite.
Moving to Newbury in Berkshire in the early 80’s Bob played at Clubs, The Henwick & Silks, with guest dj’s Sean French, Chris Brown on a regular basis. Bob got a lucky break when The Rio’s resident dj, Chris D
Smith asked Bob to do the “warm-up” every week where he went on to host most of the Rio Parties for the Didcot Dames, Groovin Groppers, Bob then on to be resident of the great historic club.
On a trip to Bournemouth one bank holiday, Bob and his friends were bored at the lack of gig’s that played our kind of music, so he took over a pub, put up a sign and the rest is history, the Bournemouth Soul Weekend was born.
What started off as a gig for 100 people one Easter, turned into a 1000 people, sold-out event, twice a year, with dj’s Chris Bangs, Giles Peterson, Bob Jones, Trevor Nelson, Nicky Holloway, Simon Dunmore, Bobbi & Steve, Phil Perry, Norman Jay….and is still going strong to this day.
Bob then went on to dj at the Special Branch “Doo at the Zoo’s, Southport Weekenders, Caister Soul Weekends, The Wag, Villa Stiffano, To the Manor Born, Ministry of Sound (Defected Nights) to name but a few…..
Bob say’s that his dj profile lead to him breaking into the Music Industry. Firstly, being offered the Head of Promotions job at Sleeping Bag Record and then being poached by A&M records, where Bob ran the Club Promotions Department, and along with his colleague Steve Wolf, started the AMPM label, where Bob ran the Club Promotions Department, promoting such artistes as CeCe Peniston, Sounds of Blackness, Janet Jackson, Wootton Bros, Neville Bros (not the Man Utd ones).
This lead to Bob being promoted to Head of Radio & TV. Bob went on to Sony Music and Polydor Records heading the Radio & Tv departments at both to great success working with an array of artistes, everyone from Sting to J-Majik.
Bob say’s, I still love finding a new tracks, something dirty, edgy and funky, Jazzy but always retaining that edge to it. I have a passion for dj’ing and there is always something special about putting people on a dance floor, building a night from scratch and having the balls to break something new.
Bob currently runs : The Ibiza Soul Week : Revenge of the Soulboy Events : Summer Madness : The Doin it in the Park Weekend : Amsterjam Weekender : The Heart of Ireland Music Festival : Funky like a Train and has his own show on Mi-Soul Radio.
